REPORT ON WOMEN IN DIGITAL ENTREPRENEURSHIP

In the digital arena where business and commerce are heading to, Digital Marketing tools and techniques provide business owners the best chances for competition, survival and even business growth. Realising the increasing importance of enhancing the understanding in Digital Marketing and the power of social media and marketing to engage, to gain customers’ trust and to win paid customers among women entrepreneurs, NAM Institute for the Empowerment of Women (NIEW) has once again organized a course under the Digital Marketing theme. The course on Women in Digital Entrepreneurship was successfully organized in collaboration with Women and Family Department of Sarawak from 17th July 2017 to 19th July 2017 at Pullman Hotel, Kuching, Sarawak.
The three day course was attended by thirty four (34) participants, comprising of women entrepreneurs who have registered under the Wisma Wanita Training Centre (WWTC). Throughout the first day of the course, the participants were given the opportunity to listen to a motivational talk on entrepreneurship by Mr. Mohamad Ariff Azahari, a professional speaker, trainer and emcee.
On the second day of the course, the participants were exposed on the importance of Digital Marketing by Miss Nor Alita Mahlil Abdullah, a digital nomad, freelancer and an expertise in the media industry for more than 15 years. In order to understand the importance of Digital Marketing to the growth of business network, the participants were given a comprehensive hands-on training on the setting up of their own LinkedIn account and profile. The participants were required to have their own LinkedIn account, profile picture and to post articles about their products by the end of the hands-on session on LinkedIn.
Another hands-on session was conducted on the second half of the second day, which was focused on a network company called the Spendless Cosmetics (SC), a direct marketing network for affordable branded cosmetics and fashion products founded by Miss Leza Parker, a social entrepreneur. The participants were also given the opportunity to become resellers for SC by registering themselves through SC’s website.
The third day of the course was graced by the presence of the owner of Anna Sue Couture, Madam Sharifah Wan Suzana Wan Shukran, a Sarawakian fashion entrepreneur. The participants learned through her talk on ‘Inspiring Representation in Successful Digital Entrepreneurship’, the importance of communicating and interacting with customers and showing the customers that they are cared for, to bring the business to life and to build long term loyalty.
The programme ended on a high note with a Closing and Certificate Presentation ceremony in the afternoon by YB Datuk Hajah Fatimah Abdullah, Minister of Welfare, Community Well Being, Women, Family and Childhood Development of Sarawak. She delivered her Closing Remarks and presented the Certificate of Participation to the participants.
Overall, NIEW is really honoured to have had the opportunity to organise the three-day course in collaboration with the Women and Family Department of Sarawak. It is hoped that this successful collaboration will continue in the future. The positive feedbacks received from the participants and speakers were also indeed useful to further improve on the institute’s future programme.
