The Proposal to establish NAM Centre on Gender and Development was announced by the Rt. Hon. Prime Minister of Malaysia in his Keynote Address at the First NAM Ministerial Meeting on the Advanchment of Women held in 2005. To realise the vision, NAM Institute for the Empowerment of Women (NIEW) was officially established on the 1st of July 2006 under the purview of the Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development.

NIEW has been organising programmes on training and capacity building for NAM Member Countries in critical areas which have been identified as crucial to the empowerment of women such as women in Politics and Economy, Women in Education and ICT Women in Health and Violence Against Women.

  • Conducts training courses and workshops in the areas of women and gender for the benefit of NAM Member Countries;
  • Organises luncheon talks and lecture series related to gender and women to government agencies, public organizations and NAM Member Countries to promote gender awareness;
  • Conducts international seminars and other programmes on current and pressing issues relating to gender and women of NAM Member Countries;
  • Coordinates and carries out research studies on women and gender-related issues of priority to NAM Member Countries;
  • Compiles and publishes articles and source reference materials on women and gender-related issues;
  • Develops skills for government officials, NGOs, private sector representatives and individuals to enable them to formulate, implement and monitor gender sensitive and gender responsive legislation;
  • Supports and provides consultation service to NAM Member Countries in their own effort to train and develop their women;
  • Strategise, plan and implement programmes to generally support the mission and vision of NIEW; and
  • Actively seeks funding and sponsorship from other corporations and organizations in order to help increase the participation of women from the poorer countries of NAM.

What is NIEW?

NIEW stands for NAM Institute for the Empowerment of Women. An International learning institute dedicated to women’s empowerment and advancement through training and capacity building. It is officially established under the purview of the Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development, on 1st July 2006.

The centre will serve as an international institute dedicated to women’s development and empowerment. NIEW will serve as a focal point to enhance cooperation among NAM Member Countries as well as other countries on gender development and empowerment.

 

What is NAM?

NAM is an international organization of 120 states (see attachments) which consider themselves not formally aligned with or against any major bloc.

 

What are the types of programmes offered by NIEW?

There are three types of programmes offered by NIEW. NIEW’s main focus will be the one week courses on the critical areas of concern identified in Putrajaya Declaration and Programme of Action, such as Women in Politics and Economy, ICT and Education, Health and Violence Against Women.

Conferences and seminar will be held in alternate years. As for research and publication, this will be concurrently undertaken following the conferences where proceeding will be circulated. At the same time, periodic publications published by Ministry Of Women, Family and Community Development could also be disseminated through virtual (website) or in written form.

How do I apply for the course?

NIEW will send an invitation to all NAM Member Countries via their embassies in Malaysia to nominate participants for the courses. All completed forms must be submitted to NIEW before the closing date as stipulated for each course.

 

Can the application be made online?

Yes! Send us an-email attached with your application form which can be download via ourwebsite.

 

Can I apply using photocopied form?

Application using photocopied form is accepted as long as the information given fulfilled the organiser terms and conditions.

 

What is the duration of courses in NIEW?

Duration of courses depend on types of courses selected, ranging from 3 days to a weeks.

 

Who can apply for training and courses in NIEW?

NIEW is established to provide training and courses for government officials, NGOs, private sector representatives, related institutions and individuals from Malaysia as well as from NAM Member Countries.

 

How much do the participants have to pay?

Basically all the expenses (except flight ticket) are borne by the Government of Malaysia, but we welcome contributions from NAM Member Countries, particularly in terms of resource persons and experts.

 

Who are the resource persons for course conducted by NIEW?

Initially, we will invite local and foreign experts to be the resources persons for courses conducted by NIEW, whilst at the same time build-up its in-house capabilities and expertise to achieve its long term goal of becoming a referral centre in the area of woman’s empowerment and advancement.
